Wet or Dry Food: Which Is Better for Your Dog or Cat?

PetzStuff

One of the most common questions we hear in the shop is: “Should I feed wet food or dry food?” The honest answer is that both can be a complete, healthy diet — as long as the label says “complete” food for your pet's life stage. Here is a simple guide to help you choose.

Dry food (kibble)

  • Convenient and economical — easy to store, measure and leave out, and usually the lowest cost per meal, especially in big bags.
  • Long shelf life once opened (keep the bag closed and dry).
  • Good for portion control and for use in puzzle feeders and treat toys.
  • Remember water: pets on dry food need fresh water available at all times.

Wet food (cans, pouches, trays)

  • Extra hydration — wet food is mostly water, which is especially helpful for cats, who often don't drink much.
  • Very tasty — great for fussy eaters, older pets or pets with a reduced appetite.
  • Softer texture — easier for pets with dental problems.
  • Fewer calories per bite — can help pets feel full while watching their weight.
  • Once opened, keep it covered in the fridge and use it within 1–2 days.

The best of both: mixed feeding

Many owners combine the two — for example dry food in the morning and a pouch in the evening, or a spoon of wet food mixed into the kibble. You get the convenience of dry food with the taste and moisture of wet food. Just reduce the amount of each so the total daily amount follows the feeding guide on the packs.

Changing food? Do it gradually

Switch over about 7 days to avoid an upset stomach:

  • Days 1–2: 75% old food, 25% new food
  • Days 3–4: 50% / 50%
  • Days 5–6: 25% old, 75% new
  • Day 7: 100% new food

How much to feed?

Always start with the feeding table on the pack, based on your pet's weight and age, then adjust to keep them in good body condition. If your pet has a medical condition or special diet, ask your vet first.
